1861: The War Begins

In early 1861, the friction between the northern and southern states (cf. page on causes of the Civil War) reached a level where the flames of war burst forth. Both sides, t the Confederacy, expected the war to be short and victorious, few in the United States realizing that the conflict would stretch well beyond 1861. By the end of the year, the magnitude and horror of the war was beginning to dawn on those both in the North and the South.
